Founded by the Portuguese in 1549 as the first capital of Brazil, Salvador is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. A sharp escarpment divides its lower town from its upper town by approximately 85 meters, 279ftand the "Elevador Lacerda", Brazil's first lift has connected the two parts of the town since 1873.
The Pelourinho, district of the upper town, still home of many examples of colonial Portuguese architecture and monuments, was name a "World Heritage Site" by Unesco in 1985.
Salvador has 372 colonial and baroque churches and the town was built to be an extension of Portugal.
Economically today Salvador is one of Brazil's most important cities for its prominent ports as an international trading centres. Also the second most popular destination in Brazil after Rio de Janeiro.
